The Water Distribution Conservation and Quality research programme supports the WD key objectives to ensure: that the regulatory framework for the water industry works effectively to protect consumers' interests while adequately safeguarding the environment and public health and safety; and that appropriate drinking water standards are set and enforced to protect public health. These objectives are given effect through the legal framework of The Water Industry Act 1991 and the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2000. Research supports also the development of policy on implementation of the new Drinking Water Directive and the European Commission's initiative to develop a European approval system for construction products used in contact with drinking water.

The EC's Framework Programmes for Research and Technological Development

The European Commission (EC) has funded FP4 (1994 - 1998), FP5 (1999 - 2002) and is currently funding FP6 (2002-2006). Each programme contains projects related to Water and Environment interests. FWR has been commissioned by Defra to review these programmes and identify projects that are relevant to the policy responsibilities of its Water Directorate (previously Water and Land Directorate). The resulting four publications are now available for download.
