The Solway Firth Review
SR(02)14B

May 2003

INTRODUCTION

This note summarises work undertaken on behalf of the Scottish and Northern Ireland Forum for Environmental Research (SNIFFER) to review the current methodology used by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) to calculate critical group doses in the Solway Firth. The groups considered were those identified in the Radioactivity in Food and the Environment (RIFE) reports for marine exposure pathways under Chapelcross and Dumfries and Galloway. The review describes how the dose assessments were carried out, and which habits and monitoring data were used. The appropriateness of the methodology is considered, and recommendations are made for any changes. The review covers the period over which RIFE annual reports for 1996 to 2000 have been made, namely as published in RIFE 1 to RIFE 6 (MAFF, 1996; MAFF and SEPA, 1997; MAFF and SEPA, 1998; MAFF and SEPA, 1999; FSA and SEPA, 2000; FSA and SEPA, 2001).
