Management Strategies and
Mitigation Measures Required to Deliver the
Water Framework Directive
for Impoundments
WFD76
August 2007
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Background to research
The implementation of the EC Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires
the development of new approaches and methodologies by the competent
authorities in the United Kingdom. One of these requirements involves
developing procedures to ensure the adequate mitigation of the negative
impacts created by the construction and operation of flood
defence impoundments, navigation impoundments and small scale flood
impoundments. Any activity to mitigate the environmental
impact of an impoundment must reconcile the protection of the local
aquatic ecology with the socioeconomic benefits of impoundments and
must fit within the overall river basin management planning process.
Objectives of research
The Objective of the project is to provide three guidance documents one
each for flood defence impoundments, navigation impoundments and small
scale flood impoundments which presents a user friendly guide for
identifying best practice and cost-effective management strategies and
mitigation measures for potential application to each impoundment type
in order to meet the requirements of the Water Framework Directive in
the UK.
