A REVIEW OF DRAFT PR 852-1 TEST METHOD FOR MIGRATION FOR PLASTIC PIPES DEVELOPED BY CEN TC 155 (DWQ 9007)

Report to the Department of the Environment

DWI0252

April 1994

SUMMARY

CEN TC 155 (WG2) 'Plastic piping systems and ducting systems' has drafted a standard 'Plastic pipes for the transport of water intended for human consumption - migration assessment. Part 1: Test method' (Draft pr EN 852-1). Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) requested WRc to review the Draft pr EN 852-1 and compare it with the relevant parts of an emerging draft standard being prepared by CEN TC 164 (WG3/AHG2) ('Water supply Influence of materials on water quality; Part 2: Influence due to migration', 8th Draft, October 1992). The latter standard, when completed, will cover a range of products made from non-metallic materials, including plastic pipes, and will then supersede the standard drafted by TC 155.

This report reviews and compares these two documents and discusses major procedural differences which might cause variations in test results. Other differences, which might, or might not, affect the test results are also listed together with any omissions and ambiguities which might lead to different interpretations. Detailed comparison of test conditions for the two procedures for testing plastic pipes is listed in tables.
