SUMMARY
I BENEFITS
The information provided in this report will enable the UK Water Industry to respond to the requirements of the EC Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive, 1991. (This report supersedes Reports FR0216 and FR0245 which should be destroyed).
II OBJECTIVES
To provide a guide to the mechanics and selection of nitrogen and phosphorus removal processes to meet the Directive.
III REASONS
There is a lack of information on nutrient removal processes to enable the selection, design and financial comparison of processes prior to installation in the UK.
IV CONCLUSIONS
Process for selection to meet the requirements of the EC Directive have been identified, and, a selection matrix for fully-nitrified existing works is provided.
V RECOMMENDATIONS
The report should be used as a guide for the selection of nutrient removal processes to meet the EC Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive.
VI RESUME OF CONTENTS
The main body of the report contains the results of the literature review of the different methods of nutrient removal. Sections include: mechanisms, selections procedure, process performance and example designs of selected processes. The importance of operation, monitoring and control is explained and emphasised.
