Report No FR0441
THE DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF THE URBAN POLLUTION DATABASE
FR0441
APRIL 1994
SUMMARY
I BENEFITS
This report is a guide to the development, contents and functionality of the Urban Pollution Database. The Urban Pollution Database contains all data collected as part of the Urban Pollution Management (UPM) programme and is structured to facilitate the wider dissemination of these data.
The Urban Pollution Database contains flow and quality data from combined sewers, combined sewer overflows (CSOs), sewage treatment works (STW) and rivers. It also includes sediment characteristics data from combined sewers, gully pots, street surfaces and rivers.
II OBJECTIVE
To incorporate all data that were previously embodied within the Sewer and River Quality Archives. In addition, to include all available new data. An important feature of the Urban Pollution Database is the inclusion of textual and diagrammatic information related to data collection programmes.
III REASON
The Sewer and River Quality Archives were inadequate to handle the large quantities and variety of data generated from the UPM and associated research programmes. A new tool was needed to facilitate data entry, analysis and dissemination.

VI RESUME
This report describes the development, purpose and structure of the Urban Pollution Database. The contents of the Urban Pollution Database are summarised and options are provided for the transfer of data to users. Examples of the type of information available through the Urban Pollution Database and an example of the application of these data are given.
