This manual is intended to assist local authorities in discharging their responsibilities for private water supplies and it may also be of use to anyone who may be responsible for, or called on to advise upon, assessment and treatment of private water supplies.

This manual summarises the relevant legislation and the functions of local authorities. Advice is given on source selection and protection and on the properties and likely sources of contamination of water. The application of water treatment processes is described and small scale devices which may find application in the treatment of private supplies are reviewed. The manual includes the addresses of key organisations, and provides a list of relevant reference documents and a glossary of technical terms.
