BROMATE IN TREATED WATERS: SUPERVISION OF PERFORMANCE TESTS

Final Report to the Department of Environment

DWI0769

Jul 1995

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

A draft analytical method has been produced by the Standing Committee of Analysts for the determination of low concentrations of bromate in treated waters, and this method has been evaluated by an inter-laboratory comparison exercise.

The method has an approximate limit of detection of 0.5 µg/l bromate and a precision of better than 10% for real samples.

The exercise highlighted some of the potential difficulties with the method and emphasises the need for full validation of the method at each laboratory performing this analysis so that incorrect data are not generated.

Both the borate eluent and the bicarbonate eluent gave acceptable results.
